On July 16, Ryan Garcia and Javier Fortuna finally get their chance to duke it out in the ring at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
Garcia made his professional debut in 2016. In November 2019 and February 2020, respectively, Garcia beat Romero Duno and Francisco Fonseca after two brutal knockouts to win the WBC silver lightweight title. He passed his first major test in January 2021, beating Luke Campbell via TKO to win the interim WBC lightweight title.
Garcia took a break from boxing shortly after his fight with Fortuna in April 2021. He was going to fight Joseph Diaz in an interim title fight, but ended up working on his mental health. Garcia returned this past November, and won a unanimous decision against Emmanuel Tagoe.
After amatuer career of more than 190 wins, Fortuna turned pro in 2009. A WBC-NABF Junior super-featherweight champion, Fortuna won the WBA (Regular) super-featherweight title in 2015 against Brian Vasquez. As a professional, she has amassed a record of 190-2.
Fortuna has had a few scary moments in his career. In 2018, he fell out of the ring against Adrian Granados. That fight ended up turning into a no-contest. Since then, he’s 4-1. In July 2021, Fortuna lost to Joseph Diaz for the interim WBC lightweight title. However, he bounced back in February by beating Rafael Hernandez via knockout.

Jimenez is hurt in round eight. Sandoval, relentless with his vicious hooks, continues his assault in round nine. By round ten, Sandoval has a lot of momentum as he chases Jimenez around the ring. Sandoval’s knees did buckle after a shot by Jimenez. Jimenez tries to go low, but Sandoval is pressing forward.
8:35 p.m. – Jimenez lands hooks to the face of Sandoval in round three, as well as inside uppercut shots. He continues to land combinations as he stalks Sandoval. Sandoval landed a late shot as the bell rang, but did not lose any points. Round four has Sandoval being the aggressor – he was the aggressor throughout the round.
Things have started to get scrappy in the fight. In round six, Sandoval continued to evade key shots and land some of his own. Jimenez went for uppercut shots, but he was landing over 60 shots compared to 100 for Sandoval through seven, via CompuBox.

The undercard for Garcia vs. Fortuna has begun. At 8:15 p.m. ET, Ricardo Sandoval takes on David Jimenez. Jimenez was aggressive from the start, landing combination punches and avoiding the shots of Sandoval. Sandoval is now adjusting in round two, but Jimenez is finding openings. Jabs by Sandoval are landing. Now both are just trading shots, waiting for the other to go down first. But in round two, Jimenez slips and falls to end the fight but not before landing crisp body shots.
